Women Walking West has introduced our newest signature program called Everyday English Program (EEP). With a grant from The Dayton Foundation, we have developed this comprehensive and engaging program for our mentees, which is a bi-weekly online course. EEP was specifically designed to support foreign-born women practice and learn everyday English.
Women Walking West ‘s mission was inspired and created specifically to help foreign born women who want to achieve a higher education in America. The vision is to afford all foreign-born adult women access to a quality education in the United States. With a growing population of immigrants, our country attracts those from all over the globe who are seeking freedom, independence, and economic pursuits.
One of the most significant hurdles for the women we serve is the language barrier. English is difficult! Because communication challenges can often hinder everyday life, not to mention educational pursuits in America, we developed a comprehensive curriculum that runs on a 10-month cycle starting every September. This bi-weekly, open-class format allows participants to practice reading and speaking everyday English while simultaneously learning about society and culture in the United States. “Can I attend anytime?” YES! Everyday English Program (EEP) classes are every other Friday from 9:30-11:00 am EST, and are stand-alone, which means that even if you have missed a class, or an entire unit, you can pick this back up as your schedule allows. However, we encourage participation as often as you are able. Our facilitators are excellent and they are here to serve you and your needs of improving the English language.
Here are some of the unit topics for Everyday English Program (EEP):
Our Place in the World
How We Show Up
Language for Career Growth
Citizenship & Civic Engagement
Empowerment & Advocacy
In addition to learning about a variety of subjects, another value has emerged. In that these classes teach English, they are also fostering community and enabling participants to find meaningful connections with other foreign born women who now find their home in the United States.
Our core values: Compassion, Academic Success, Respect and Empathy (CARE) have been the underlying foundation for creating this course. We would like to encourage any foreign born woman who is looking for an engaging program, which will also improve their English skills, to join us!
